"I Am a Clown"

Here's another DC clip from the eighties - the whole decade was a bad dream, à la Dallas, ok? - thanks to Catgil2 for sharing. From his debut solo album "Cherish", "I am a Clown" could veer dangerously close to maudlin territory but Cassidy usually reins it in with his sincere delivery, no doubt accepting how accurately songwriter Tony Romeo described him with those lyrics. Even casual DC fans can recognize the bitter truth in the portrayal. In the 1973 concert performance captured in the "Weekend at Wembley" documentary, the line "Tell me you love me, make me real" gives me goosebumps. Here, his rendition is serviceable, hardly goosebump-inducing and I wonder if the pianist is playing at the right tempo or if it's a YT synchronization issue. The live clip from 1973 is embedded below - thanks to Scarpett for sharing.

I used to skip over this song when I listened to the Cherish album because I didn't get it at 12 years old. It is now my favorite DC song because I think he really meant the words he was singing.

Thanks for posting this DD! I think I may have seen the newer I'm A Clown awhile ago. But I appreciate it more now that I know more about DC.

Of course, it's always a treat to see and listen to him perform at Wembley!!!! LuckyB, I usually have the exact same response, feeling like I cannot catch my breath watching that clip and others from Wembley. He's amazingly and stunningly beautiful to listen to and watch live from that period of time.

I like him in dark hair best but NEVER did I think he didn’t look like a gorgeous MAN as a blond (as opposed to other things some have mentioned). LOL!!! But I think I can see something about this blond look that I'm not real crazy about. They seem to have lightened his lips with makeup. You can see a dramatic difference in his lip color between this blond look and his dark-haired look. His mouth, even though thin lipped, is sexy as heck and when they lighten his lips it is almost like they’re hardly there. I understand that they probably had to play with his coloring to match the blond hair. But I think they went too far with the lips.

I think it's his skin that's darker which makes his lips look lighter. I'm a natural brunette and I tried going the blond route in my younger days and it was as if my face had disappeared. Seriously. Lipstick became my best friend real fast.

Thanks ladies. I think you've sussed why the blond look was 'strange'. It was a 'look' of the time though and thankfully he went back to 'au naturel'.

I love that wembley clip, he's so sweaty and gorgeous, the minx! Those moments were special, I would loved to have been there. This was my favourite song of young David. It sounded beautiful on the Cherish lp. I'd play that and then the version on the 'live' lp. I thought he must have wrote it himself back then and it made me sad as I thought David was trying to tell us he how fame made him feel. I was a very serious kid!! I still love the song today as it reminds so much of those times.

I've never seen that eighties clip before so thanks for that. He left out the beginning! Perhaps it is a song that best fits the young David Cassidy. His spoken vocal on that was divine.

That's interesting, DD. I've never attempted lightening my hair. Even now when I color it, I hesitate to go with highlights or to go with lighter browns. It seemed that darker hair suits my skin color better (medium with a tint of olive). I'm told though that some people's skin tone changes when they get older, and then lighter hair starts to look better. That hasn't happened to me so far. My colorist was hesitating to go as dark as I wanted it but I think it looks better. It's really no more dark than my original hair color now, but it has more of a bronze tinge to it. My brown had an ash blond base and supposedly that type of color doesn't cover gray well. It's a little different but I like it. It seems like a richer color.

You're very lucky having olive skin singme as darker hair would definitely suit your complexion. I've always been pale skinned and I think it has got paler with age. I cant wear my hair so dark anymore as it makes me look a little washed out, funny I tried blonder hair and that's the same(washed out looking)so now it is a lighter brown tone which seems about right! It's like the flaming 3 bears! Too dark, too light, just right. LOL!

The moral is blond dont suit everyone! (including David)
