Would be an interesting duet, no?

I stumbled upon Suzi Quatro's "Stumblin' In" today on YouTube and LOVED it. Didn't know the song. The only thing I recalled about Suzi was that she played Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days in the 70s and I LOVED the glam rock feel of "Devil's Gate Drive" played on that show. ("Stumblin' In" is much softer than her trademark style.) Back then, there was no internets and I certainly didn't have money to follow music in fan magazines. I was a kid and pretty much only discovered music through TV. The radio was on in the house for my mother (talk radio) and the stereo was stacked with my father's big band albums. Anyhoo. All this to say that I didn't know that Suzi Quatro actually had a career that went beyond her stint on Happy Days.

So here I am discovering her great tunes and researching her career a bit and I find out that she was also born in 1950. She's actually only a couple of months younger than David Cassidy.

She rocked. She really did. She might have rocked harder than David Cassidy ever did in those days. She was Joan Jett's inspiration; that's how groundbreaking she was. Pretty much the only female entertainer rocking hard on the bass backed by a male band at the time.

Parallels with Mr. Cassidy:
-appeared on an iconic 70s TV sitcom (as a guest star, but still)
-found bigger success in Europe than in her native country (thinking in terms of whole career span)
-is in the biz for the love of music and entertaining
-is still rocking today at 59

I could definitely see David Cassidy, circa 1990, collaborating with Ms Quatro. Mr. Cassidy, millennium edition? Not so sure. And as much as the gritty male vocals in "Stumblin' In" are PERFECT for this song (yeah Chris Norman), I do wonder how it would sound with David Cassidy singing those sweet lyrics.

OK, I think I like you...

I really enjoyed episode 6 of Ruby. Finally, some humanity in David Gallagher.

I'm trying, really I am...

to like Ruby & The Rockits but it's about as easy as toilet training my strong-willed three year old.

I tuned it for David Cassidy (gasp!) but I'm not liking David Gallagher one bit. His character is beyond caricature and I've yet to feel any inkling of humanity in him. The latest episode had him in the most inane exchange with Audie that it was laughable for all the wrong reasons. "Pick me up a rotisserie chicken."?!? Did he even say please? And what's with the spider monkey in the tree never mind breaking out your own daughter to become potential jailbait for a stranger (as cute and inoffensive as the guy looked, he was a 19-yr old stranger!)?

Love the premise of the show, think Alexa Vega has a lovely voice, happy to have discovered Patrick Cassidy (yum!), Austin Butler is teen magazine cover material for sure, the music rocks, but the rest? Pffft. The actress who plays Audie delivers her lines with such stiffness, you'd think she eats starch for breakfast. Yes, there are funny lines but the scenarios are stilted and the cast dynamic is somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. I can't believe how much David Cassidy has hyped this show, going on and on about how it's the best he's ever done, how every cast member hits it out of the park with every line, etc.

Crossing fingers and toes this show ramps up and captures my heart SOON. I really want a hit for our man DC.

Seriously? Cassidymania redux?

"Teary fans from throughout the United States, Europe and Canada are frantically requesting front row seats, backstage passes and even special permission to “touch” actor, singer, songwriter, and guitarist David Cassidy, who will perform at Queensborough Community College on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 8:00PM."

"In fact, Cassidymania has reached such a fever pitch at QPAC that David Cassidy recently posted a message on his official website, imploring fans to not be “overly persistent with venues”.
The superstar, along with his rock band, will perform the all-time favorites I Can Feel Your Heartbeat, Come On Get Happy, I’ll Meet You Halfway, Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque and more."

Seriously? Who wrote this? It seems just a little over the top, no? And "superstar"? Today, in 2009, in the age of Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers and Lady Gaga's video garnering 50 million+ views on YouTube, is David Cassidy still considered a superstar? Gotta love all the monikers used to describe Mr. Cassidy: actor, singer, songwriter, and guitarist. They forgot race horse breeder and humanitarian.

You sure can please me, Mr. Cassidy

In one of my early posts I said that one day David Cassidy popped into my head for the first time in decades. I lied. I recently recalled that years ago (not a decade but perhaps close?), I got connected to Napster. Remember Napster? Don't ask me why but one of the first singers I searched for was David Cassidy. I downloaded "Rock Me Baby" (it was the only track of his that I found) and I remember listening to it with headphones through a shitty computer sound system and going, "Whoa, that voice is sexy. Is that voice sexy? OMG, but that's a sexy voice. It really is." And I'd wanted to hear him sing "satisfaction", "recreation", "all right now, roll me" and that special phrase that still makes me wobbly-kneed: "you sure can please me, mmm mmm" ad infinitum.

Today, I find David Cassidy's young voice to be one of the sultriest I've ever heard and I've yet to find another male solo artist whose voice affects me the same way. There are other great male voices out there, most definitely. Nat King Cole had a voice like honey. Gorgeous. But sexy? Not to my ears. Frank Sinatra's considered one of the great voices of the century but I find his voice boring. Is that sacrilegious to admit? Elvis Presley could sing anything and make it his own. His voice was sexy. But I still prefer Mr. Cassidy's. And check out the sexy look our man gives the camera at 2:56 when he purrs "oh, you sure can please me, mmm mmm".

"I saw Hendrix five, six times..."

David Cassidy has often said this in interviews, especially in biographical ones, and it always makes me laugh. Dude, could you ever imagine that one day women would be going to see YOU perform HUNDREDS of times, never mind five or six?!?! And you thought you were fanatical?

Fans will brag about seeing all his performances that night or week and some fans will travel halfway across the globe to see him perform just about anywhere, even if it's in the middle of nowhere. At his recent Peterborough Festival of Lights concert, fans from Japan and Australia came to see him. If you know where Peterborough is, chances are you're Canadian. Otherwise, it's Peter-who?

He's a great live performer but David NOW doesn't have the same stage presence as David THEN and from the clips I've seen on YouTube, his concert shtick is repetitive. His play list doesn't vary much and neither does his chatter between songs. Not sure I'd pay to see him perform live now (gasp!). And I still call myself a fan (tsk, tsk).

Over half a million views!

Yay, ITILY finally got over half a million views on YouTube. There are three or four videos uploaded of this song in various guises (including a version performed by a young David on an unknown show as well as a simple lyrics slideshow) so the total for the song is way more than a million views but I was hoping that one of the single clips from the show would garner at least 500,000. And it has. Not sure why this thrills me so.
