His Sexiest Song?

In celebration of Valentine's Day, Billboard compiled their list of the Top 50 songs about sex. Notice I did not say "sexiest songs". No. These songs made the list because their lyrics are about sex and they charted highly. That's all. These are not necessarily sexy songs. Billboard explains the list:
"...the 50 most popular songs about sex ever, as based on each song's performance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (from August 4, 1958 -- the inception of the Hot 100 chart -- through the Jan. 16, 2010 issue)."

"Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years."

Now, here's one song that made Billboard's list. It also made a VH-1 countdown at some point and guess who introduced it on that show? ;-)

So, to paraphrase Salt-n-Pepa, let's talk about sex in songs. What do you think is David Cassidy's sexiest song? My choice: "Rock Me Baby" - perhaps the most obvious choice, but what can I say, his voice could prompt deals with the devil. Here's a live clip of him singing it on a European music show back then (don't mention the show please - this clip has been removed from YT in the past). Only found one clip of the 1972 recorded version of the song and it's the one of him in his shiny pink suit on "Top of the Pops".

SCREAMS!!!!!!!!!!! David sure is sexy here, voice and ... facial expressions!!!!!! OMG. Thanks, DD.

I actually HAVE been trying to decide on his sexiest song recently but so far I haven't been able to choose just one. I will think on it some more today. But this live version of him singing RMB may just be it.

I've chosen the one I think is his most emotional.

Let me guess, Sing Me? :)

BTW, did you watch the first clip?

That a nice surprise, seeing David do an introduction, I actually like the song Afternoon Delight. I do however have to confess that I find most so-called sexy songs or songs about sex extremely naff. Thanks goodness they didn't have Je t'aime in that list, that's the naffest of all.

I like the brick wall approach myself or 'tell it like it is'. In other words I prefer the Rock 'n' Roll approach rather than the sappy love song approach. I'm just not romantic - sorry guys.

The lyrics in David's song could be naff but not the way David delivers them.

The way he say Rock Me, my oh my. And when he says Get Down, I want to obey!! Not too steamy for you DD I hope. I don't mind being edited. This is my kind of sexy song.

I think Fix of your Love is quite sexy although not overtly describing sex as such but would certainly get you in the mood. Well it would with David purring the song in your ear.

YES!!! He is very very sexy in this clip and of course his voice is strong and very good sounding here.

There are a lot of David Cassidy songs I´ve never heard. From which songs I know I would choose Junked Heart Blues.
I LOVE him singing that song.
His voice is strong and even soft, he points out the ups and downs in this song perfectly. He is realy catching me over and over again....thinking myself.. Gush!!......this man sounds soooooo sexy!!

That clip is from the German show "Musikladen".It was aired from the early 70´s until 1984.

The guests performed live. It was a target date to watch that show.No Computer,no video recorder at that time.Unimaginable in these days,or?

LOL, Tina Funk, who lives in Germany and does Just David with me (she started it in 1974) had a funny incident. When David appeared on one of the German music show in the 70's they put her address on the screen as he was singing, as an address to write to David. Well she had fans calling her and even had fans waiting outside her house because they thought this is where David was staying while in Germany! And to make it even funnier, one of her neighbors liked American cars and he had an imported one parked at the curb, so the fans thought that the Amer car was proof that David was staying there even thought Tina told them he was not! LOL

Yes, it sounds even better when he sings it live.

Another tune of his I like is This Could Be The Night, that's quite sexy the way David sings it.
Imagine David singin this to you:
"Each time we kiss it takes a little bit longer, my love for you grows a little bit stronger and I feel like I'm sittin on dynamte".

Oh dear, all my suggestions are from Higher They Climb, I'm very biased towards that album.

I wish we had video footage of him singing This Could be the Night or Fix of Your Love; watching him sing 'If I Didn't Care' or 'I Write the Songs', he's so sensual the way he closes his eyes all the time and rolls his head back. He used to sing in such a sincere and hypnotic way, he could seduce anyone.

British fan, I'm kinda liking that lyric: "Each time we kiss it takes a little bit longer, my love for you grows a little bit stronger and I feel like I'm sittin on dynamite" but I don't think it's in David's version of the song. When does he sing it? And I'm with you regarding those lovey-dovey romantic ballads - usually can't stand them.

Barbara - Just David: that is a very funny story. I'm sure Tina's family must have appreciated all those Cassidymaniacs at their door. BTW, will you chime in with your vote for his sexiest song?

British fan said...

Damn - di I get that one wrong. I found the lyrics look under Harry Nilsson who wrote it as I cant find the lyrics to David's version - I thought it was the same song. Doh!!

British fan said...

I stand corrected DD. I just looked up the lyrics on my CD. Honestly they're so small you need amagnifiying glass. Looks like the song's been changed a bit, toned down. Guess that's why David's co-writer. Think I like the original lyrics better!

I never really listen to the lyrics of songs much. I shall have to take more notice of such details.

"Romance"

"Tenderly"

Daydreaming David said...

Ack! No, Barbara, not his blond period. :)

Barbara - Just David said...

The lyrics to Romance are sexy - "Tonight you're mine, darling we can take our time, turn the lights down low, tonight I feel like letting go and making sweet romance." Man that's IS sex. And I liked him with the blonde hair. You had to be with him in person to appreciate it, he looked good, he was in good mood and very accessible for fans. His hair was full and thick. Sorry for me that was a wonderful time to be around him.
I do not like his hair at all the way it is now. He doesn't look like the guy I knew.

Daydreaming David said...

The lyrics are TOO sexy for me - not my cup of tea. I have to admit they don't sound too too bad with his voice though ;-) I'm sure he looked good in person with blonde hair - he has such beautiful features. I agree with you about his current hairstyle. What's the most flattering on him is bangs - it gives his face perfect proportions and he's just stunning. Ah, we can wax poetic about hair all we want but after a while, we don't dictate our hairstyles; our hair does.

You're not the first person to say he was very accessible during that period. You are lucky to have been following his career all this time.

I've enjoyed all these posts!

Yes, DD, Sing Me. The second verse he sings tugs at my heart strings every time I hear it. You can hear his emotion in his singing and breathing. Bless him.

Yes, I watched the first clip BEFORE I watched RMB no less, but sorry, my brain got hijacked listening and watching him sing RMB. LOL!

I meant to say that I remember seeing mention of the first video on YouTube recently but I guess I forgot to watch it so thanks so much for posting this! Of course I think the short dark-haired guy is cute and a very good singer. They all are good singers.

Even if the lyrics are not sexy, David's delivery usually is. Just hearing his voice, especially his non-PF work, seduces me into a trance immediately. LOVE IT!!!!

I think Mae is very sexy. I Can Feel Your Heartbeat. I think the way he does Be-Bop-A-Lula, Junked Heart Blues, and Please, Please Me is very sexy. I'd love to hear him sing those "Each time we kiss..." lyrics. Wow!

British fan said...

Doh!! How could I forget David's version of Fever - that's sexy!!!!!!

Just to lighten the mood a little, and take our minds off recent events, I'd like to publicly state I would like to stand in front of David Cassidy whilst he's on stage singing Chuck Berry's immortal classic My Ding-A-Ling!!!

British fan said...

I also have to say Pffft! to that list of 50 songs too. Not a Mowtown classic there, and Mowtown is full of sexy songs. What about George McCrae, Rock Your Baby?!!! That should have made the list it was a great song,a big hit and gets to the point!

Daydreaming David said...

Singmedavid, I agree with you about "Mae" being a sexy song which is why it baffles me no end he dedicates it to his mother in concerts. (I know her middle name is Mae, but with lyrics like
"Mae, what a good time you are
Always willin'
Never say no to me
Put your lovin' arms around me",
it doesn't sound like the song addresses a mother! I know mine said no to me plenty of times!)

British fan, don't worry too much about that list - it's all about numbers. "Rock Your Baby" probably didn't stay at the top of their Hot 100 chart long enough.

heres another review. It gets worse he's started taking phone numbers from fans in the audience! I heard that he did that in the past but thought he was a little more discreet.

LOL, DD!! Maybe there's more to his sordid past than we know. Just kidding.

Ditto, BF, about My Ding-A-Ling. LOL!

There are so many other songs that I find a lot sexier than what is on that list.

ContraryMary said...

There's no doubt he's damned sexy in this clip singing Rock Me Baby, but it's not one of my favourite songs (I could view the clip for hours though). I agree with BF that This Could Be the Night is one of his sexiest, as is I'm On Fire (there was a brilliant clip on YT of him singing this & playing guitar with Steve Ross - he may have been miming but he oozed sexiness). I always thought his voice was pretty sexy in the Puppy Song too, although the lyrics aren't!

Daydreaming David said...

ContraryMary, I agree with you that he oozed sexiness in that clip of him with Steve Ross. I've never seen eyes sparkle like that on camera before - they'd give the Hope diamond an inferiority complex.

What a lovely description of David's eyes DD.

UK Fan said...

If anyone has seen the video of David in the '90s astride a chair singing 'No bridge I wouldn't cross' then they would see David at his sexiest best with a nice sense of humour and a big smile !
Oh to be that chair :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyJv061kTMI
and I also agree with BarbaraP with Romance even with that 'je t'aime' like section in the middle.

Daydreaming David said...

Ah yes, UK Fan, that is a lovely video. Plenty of sex appeal there. ;-)
