Urban Legend

Through Google Alerts, I've learned that more than a few people see a resemblance between one of the current American Idol contestants and a young David Cassidy. Apparently, this young man looks like DC and sounds like him in the Partridge Family. Now, I don't follow that glitzy talent show but I've seen a couple of pictures of the young man in question and all I can say is "Huh?" Yeah, yeah, I see the feathered hair. But it's not the same cut, people. It's feathered towards his face. Total opposite of Cassidy's style which was feathered AWAY from his face ;-) Subtle difference but oh what a difference. Not to mention his dissimilar features. AI dude has chiseled cheekbones. Cassidy had a baby face. Look at the eyes, the nose, the smile. Not taking anything away from the young man's good looks but come on people, compare objectively. There is no resemblance. If you want to compare his looks to any past teen idol, look at Bobby Sherman. Similar hairstyle and piercing blue eyes.

As for the young contender's voice, here's a clip of him massacring a Rolling Stones classic (starts at 1:27). If that performance has piqued your interest in his vocal talent, well, you're on your own to hunt YT for more. I am so not there. You're welcome to report back if his voice matches our man's. To make amends for exposing you to this sacrilege, I've included Streetheart's cover of the song which, imho, surpasses the original.

(Helpful pic of Bobby Sherman to fill those memory blanks. )

Love the pun!

How weird. You must be psychic. I was looking at an on-line article about this yesterday when I googled DC news. Thanks for the footage, I dont think I would have found it or bothered to be honest. I do like this song though.

I think these shows look for an 'angle' for each contestant. He doesn't really 'look' or 'sound' like David but there's definitely some simiarity to David's style of singing and general David 'aura'. I dont know if the young guy has been coached this way or does it naturally by himself. He seems pleasant enough though.
Pasted this from some site called Gather. Is it OK to do this, hope I haven't plagiarized this writer.

"Tim Urban looked and sounded even more like David Cassidy of Partridge Family fame, than he already did. Unfortunately, I do not think his voice was any near as good as David's. He performed my favorite Stones' song, Under My Thumb, like a hokey, jazzy, country tune and it was, as the judges said, "just bizarre". They did like that he took a chance and did something different with the song, staying true to what type of artist he wanted to show he is. Simon lost a little more credibility with me when he said it was a boring song. I hope he was talking about Tim's rendition and not the hit the Rolling Stones made out of it.

I gave him a B for his imitation of David Cassidy, intentional or no, but a C for his weird performance."

Physically, he doesn't have DC's sex appeal, although he's a cute kid. Vocally, though, I see the similarities. He does the breathy thing. He puts expression into the song. I can really see him singing PF songs. Picture it---"You Are Always on My Mind"---AI kid could do that. LOL!

Had never heard of this guy before. Different opinions about him: I think there is some resemblance to David, it's something with the eyes and how he looks into the camera, but I don't he's that goodlooking. And his voice - like David's? I can't hear any likeness at all. I'm not impressed by this guy.

You're right, DD! I think he has a lot of Sherman's features, sharper, thicker, more masculine. But I think his eyes are more like David's than Bobby's in expression and in shape in that they turn down a little at the sides. But...David's are so much more beautiful. His face is more heart shaped like David's too.

As far as his voice, I can hear the breathiness he's got, and it actually seems like he's trying to emulate David's singing!!!!! I wouldn't be surprised, but another big NOPE, he doesn't have it.

I can see where they come up with the resemblance but I think it is a stretch. Perhaps they are trying for an angle, like British Fan says. But sometimes I wonder if what we've got going on here is a bit of "Searching for David Cassidy", where people are so in want, in need of another phenomenon like he was. I daresay if young David were to be just entering the showbiz scene now as he did back then, I think he'd still cause the biggest stir ever. I can never get over how gorgeous he is looks and voice were.

The comments I've come across likening TU to young DC are mostly from reviewers of the show, not official word from the show producers or anything like that. Not sure if AI markets contestants a certain way so early in the running.

I'll be honest, Urban's reggae take on "Under My Thumb" distracted me so much that I hardly paid attention to his vocals. To pair lyrics about dominating a woman with a laid-back, "ya mon, life's good on the resort" groove is just plain goofy. How can I take him seriously after that? The young man does not have killer musical instincts, sorry.

But seeing as some of you do hear breathy vocals, I thought I'd give him a second chance and listen to another performance. I did not WATCH him perform because I wanted to focus on his voice. I found this , a performance of a song he felt comfortable singing. I still do not find his voice sexy in the least. Reading comments on YT, plenty of young girls find him "hot" so more power to him. I think he looks like a choirboy but then again, I'm twice his age. Even with a baby face, DC never looked like a choirboy to me ;-) Just sayin' :)

Can you imagine young David not yet famous singing on AI today? There'd be a stampede in the audience and the voting lines would be jammed. AI would have the highest ratings ever. LOL!

I think Ellen has a point about him acting. I do think he is a cutie. Maybe he just needs a lot of singing coaching, although, I agree with Simon, I thought he did a very good job performing Come On Get Higher (coincidence in song title?), was expressive and on key for the most part. It seems like he does have the potential to improve quite a bit, IMHO. But I don't think his voice has the quality of being so instantly recognizable like David's does, nor that instinctive sensual lure.

You're so right, Singme, about young David's impact on AI today. He would still cause quite a stir. Perhaps you are right about the public aching to discover another charismatic performer like him. Love your description of his singing: "instinctive sensual lure" - spot on.

Thanks, DD! :)

Don't see him looking like David.
More like Bobby Sherman, and FORGETTING the hair, a little like Richard Thomas in Walton days.
The voice has a touch of similarity as David, but not much.

On his own though without comparisons (I think they compare any new young guy singer to him), this guy is good. I can see him going on even if he gets voted off - like how Daughtry & Lambert went on to better without winning.
