A Challenge

Hi, my name is Daydreaming David and I'm addicted to David Cassidy's voice.

Faithful reader and commenter British fan mentioned a couple of entries back that she was listening to The Partridge Family's "Crossword Puzzle" - probably the least-loved of all their albums - and was appreciating ALL the songs on it thanks solely to David's voice. I can relate. There's just something about that man's voice. I am totally hooked. On "As Long As There's You", doesn't his voice just comfort, especially during this verse (1:23 - 1:44)?:
You are the sun that shines upon my face
And smiles upon my life in everything I do
So let the rain come pouring to the ground
Cause nothing gets me down
As long as there is you
Actually, there are a lot of somethings about that man's voice. It's sweet, seductive, soothing and to my ears, very special. Singmedavid calls it inimitable. Can you find me a male singer whose voice is as lovely and his phrasing as evocative as DC's? C'mon. Help me kick my habit. This is not a rhetorical question :)

From the previously-mentioned "Crossword Puzzle", here is "It's You". Try and resist David Cassidy's sexy "Hello Baby" opening.

I join you, ladies, I have been hooked since the first time I heard it. Remember, I had only seen photos of him when I first fell in love (thankfully he will not read this), and his voice was a very pleasant surprise. He was perfect!
Inspired by Daydreaming's wish list I started listening to the newer albums. I bought both the new and the old ones when I rediscovered him in November 2007, but until now I have been busy listening to the old songs. The newer albums didn't get me hooked at the first listening, but now! I listened to the Enigma-album two days ago, and this time I was ready for it. I love it! The songs are good, David's voice is as sexy as ever and mostly one can also hear it clearly! By now you know me and the background vocals, which disturb me in the refrain of "Lyin' to Myself", but not otherwise, as I remember now. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a favourite of mine (as usual I can only keep one or two titles in my mind at the same time).

Very tough challenge, because as far as I know, there really are (or were) no other singers like David Cassidy, with the sweet, sexy voice that we love so well. But I will throw a few out there and see what people think:

Rob Thomas definitely has the sexy thing going, with his voice, and he's nice to look at, too. And I like a lot of his music.

Ben Harper is funky/rock & roll, not exactly sexy, but soulful and quite a good singer, and he plays excellent guitar. He gets a 10 on the coolness scale!

I found David Halley when I lived in Austin, Texas many years ago and fell in love with his music. He writes the most beautiful songs, plays with the best musicians, and there's something about his voice that is very beautiful to me. Here's another clip of a song he wrote.

Now we get to the really obscure stuff...I've mentioned here before that I play Irish fiddle...I listen to a LOT of Irish and Scottish music, and there was a group back in the 80's called Silly Wizard that was the catalyst for this whole genre for me. Their singer was someone named Andy Stewart, and he is one of the best singers I've ever heard. He doesn't have the sexy thing going, but his voice and expression are lovely. Two examples: The Blackbird, and (about halfway in, after the funny intro)Land O' the Leal (the fiddler, Johnny Cunningham, is the reason I started to play myself).

And finally, there's Dougie Maclean, who is known as the Scottish James Taylor...there's something about his voice that gets to me somehow. His most famous song is Caledonia, (Caledonia was the Roman word for Scotland), which he wrote when he was in France and homesick for Scotland. Couldn't find a live recording of this without the audience singing with him!

So those are the singers I can think of. There are also some Latin and Country singers with nice voices, but I don't know those genres well enough to recommend anything. Anyway, Daydreaming, thanks for the links to the DC songs!

Thanks Daydreaming David!!! I look forward to checking out these other artists.

I'm conditioned now too, I hear his voice, and I go immediately into swoon state. It doesn't seem to matter what he's singing anymore. It's very weird, like the letdown reflex at the sound of your baby. I wonder if any of these other artists voices will be close enough to cause the same reaction. :-)

Wow Singme, I like your description of 'letdown reflex'. That's very fitting. I enjoy even the most boring chores when listening to David sing! Some days when everyone's home and under my feet I can't play any of it cos they all moan. Can't wait for the family to clear off so I can press the play button again. Guess that's a good enough definition of addiction. I'm doing it in secret now. Note to self. Must get an Ipod.

Thanks, British Fan!!! Secret! I know, except I have no one to keep it from. My kids wonder why they can't get on the computer as much anymore, but I am completely unabashed about my enthusiasm. They already think I'm weird.

Wow, SLK, those are fantastic!!! I could listen to David singing those too. Mmmm - esp. that Ben Harper one. And David Halley - WOW, what a find!!! These acoustics are great!! And yes, SLK, the violin sings. I envy your ability to play. My sons took Suzuki violin and piano when they were very young. I was so impressed with the littlest violin!!! My gosh, had no idea.

Thanks for sharing those SLK. I'm not getting the David vibe but that is some seriously good music.

Recently I tried to synchronize two YouTube renditions of David singing Could It Be Forever. One was the then version, and one was a later version with Hearsay (both posted by SumerKis38). It was tricky to do, but I did get them synchronized a few times. The sound was unbelievable. His later voice, singing along with his then voice. OMG! It was great!!!

Thanks SLK for the links. I always appreciate good music and haven't come across those artists before.

I'm afraid I'm not much help with any suggestions. You know, everytime I buy a new cd or listen to downloads, I'll play it over and over for a while until I'm sick of hearing it. Then it gets tossed aside for a few months. I get bored.

With David I just don't get bored. I've been playing his music almost daily since January and I still can't get enough. I thought I would have gotten just a little fed up by now.

Sill me. I left out the most important part. It dawned on me that I could never get bored with David's voice because it can be so different and versatile. There's something for everyone from ballad through to rock.
Is there any other artist you can say that about?

There are quite a few others that do that also.

Anonymous 7:07, please share your suggestions! :)

British fan, I'm a couple months behind you in my re-discovery kick and I'm not bored yet either. Clodyne has been at it for the past three years. I'm not sure she listens to much else besides DC or PF.

SLK, that is an amazing list. Thank you so much for your suggestions. Rob Thomas! Of course. Yes, sexy voice. Doesn't have the sweetness that I detect in David's voice though. The one closest in your suggestions I think is David Halley with Andy Stewart a close second. I'll give these a more thorough listen. Thanks again.

MaeB, I was too young for David's voice to register when I discovered him I think. I had a PF album and Rock Me Baby but I think it was more to hold a piece of him somehow than to appreciate his voice, make sense? No, I'm afraid that his looks just knocked my socks and ears off, back then.

Ok, everyone. I have another voice for your consideration. Billy Idol. Did I ever think he was gorgeous on the cover of his album "Don't Stop", and his voice is sexy. Is it sweet enough? This is a slower song of his that I don't recall ever hearing (my rebel phase must have been short). What do you think?

British fan said...

Good hunting DD!! I was a punk fan in my teens. Oh the shame, wearing bin liners. Do you know what they are? Strong black plastic bags than line your dustbin/trash can.

I did like Billy Idol and his voice but he never 'did' anything for me personally in the fancying department. He was seen as the King of Cool for a while. I love his song 'White Wedding', one of my very favourites.

Daydreaming David said...

Well, Mr. Idol didn't stay hardcore punk that long, did he? In one interview I saw of his on Arsenio Hall, he mentions that at the start of his career, his management was trying to point him in the direction of Rick Springfield, looks-wise. He could have brushed his hair down and become David Cassidy with guaranteed success, but he didn't want that. He wanted to stay true to his roots, you know? ;-) That post-accident interview here and "John Wayne" is a new song he released last year. I must say I like it. He's got one heck of a sexy voice. I wonder if it's as versatile as David's.

Daydreaming David said...

Forgot to ask, Bf, how the heck did you wear those bin liners? Don't recall them being a big fashion statement over here with our long brutal winters. The 80s were really just horrid, fashion-wise, weren't they?

British fan said...

Yeah the 80's suck. Punk hit Britain in about 1976/77 believe it or not. You'd wear a ripped T shirt or borrow an oversize white shirt off your dad, with either ripped jeans or black tight pants/leggings. You cut a slit in the liner for your head and two armholes. Rip it slightly so it looks scruffy. Wear a studded belt to hold it all together and safety pins. lol. Eye make-up like Alice Cooper.
Actually I thought the plastic bags were a step too far and ditched them. I didn't keep the look too long. It attracted too much trouble. I was a good girl so therefore NO piercings thank goodness.

I was such a fashion victim, now I couldn't care less.

I think I'd have preferred to be a hippy like David!

That Billy Idol song isn't bad. I remember when he was popular---certain punk girls were into him for the sexy aspect. He certainly can sing. His voice is much deeper in pitch than David Cassidy's, though, which changes the appeal of it for me. Hmmm. Very hard challenge. Cassidy is very had to match.

I remember 80s fashion too! I was very into the big hair---had a perm, used lots of hairspray, but only for styling, not to make it wind-proof! And I had a very cool gigantic leather jacket. It wasn't all bad back then!

Daydreaming David said...

Oh, you were all cooler than I was. My friends had the wanna-be-punk-aftermath look in the 80s (I knew by then that punk had started in Britain in the mid-70s) and I wanted the ubiquitous bomber leather jacket but never managed to get it. My wish was to be a fashion victim but alas, I was a good girl with no real fashion sense and strict parents. In the late 80s, I died my hair blond and my father didn't talk to me for 2 weeks.

Glad to know that Billy CAN sing. You Brits have good singers.
